What is Wilderstyle Music?

A welcome alternative to the typical music heard in films, tv, and commercials. A combination of ass shaking beats mixed with various musical flavors. Real musicians playing real instruments, lush orchestral arrangements over raw hip hop beats, Latin percussion over sped up reggae rhythms. In other words, an unexpected mix of ingredients, both familiar and new at the same time, perfectly suited to today’s ever changing visual content.

Who is Wilderstyle Music?

Grammy nominated songwriter/composer/producer  Dave Wilder and his crew, some of LA and NYC’s most talented musicians and programmers. If you have never heard of Dave, you have most likely heard his music.  He has written songs with, Macy Gray, including her smash hits,
“I Try” (earning him a 2001 Song of the Year Grammy Nomination.”)  and “Sexual Revolution,” as well as with Joss Stone, MoZella, and Rod Stewart. You might also have unknowingly nodded your head to his bass playing on recordings by Macy, or Liz Phair, to name a few   His songs and instrumental compositions have been featured in major motion pictures, network and cable TV shows, and international advertising campaigns. History:

Dave Moved to LA in 1991 in hopes of becoming a successful hip hop producer. In Philly he had studied bass and jazz composition with the late Denis Sandole, (Teacher of John Coltrane and James Moody), and played shows with local rappers, so he figured he could translate that into a studio production career on the West Coast. After a disheartening first year, in which several promising hip hop studio projects went sour, he quickly started playing bass live again.

Macy Gray spotted Dave playing with a soul group called the 2pc at a small Hollywood club in 1995 and eventually recruited him to play on her debut album on Atlantic records.  He co-wrote a bunch of the songs on the never released album including the title track. Dave hit the road for several years as a bassist for Liz Phair but was recruited back by Macy in 1998. She had secured another record deal based on the strength of the song “I Try” that she had co-written with Dave and his friends Jinsoo Lim and Jeremy Ruzumna years earlier. She convinced Dave to quit his other road gigs and come play with her again.  During the next three years, Dave toured the world playing with Macy, jammed on stage with idols like Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Prince, and George Clinton, and got to learn first hand how to move a crowd.
In 2001, weary of touring, Dave came back to LA and turned his groove towards writing and producing, assembling a small but mighty studio in the scenic Glendale neighborhood of Adams Hill. In his new spot, Dave collaborated with up and coming artists, such as Joss Stone, Rosey and MoZella, as well as continuing to record and write with Macy, (he co-wrote three songs on her sophomore album, “The Id”). At the same time he continued composing ecletic instrumentals of his own.

This love for instrumental music lead to Dave’s writing original compositions for tv shows, films and international ad campaigns. He quickly found that he loved the creativity of working with visual media.  Making music for tv and film seemed a perfect way to combine all of his favorite influences in a fresh new way.  The challenge of Wilderstyle Music: to create from a different perspective, one that inspires the client, and retains the uniqueness and excitement that pushed Dave and his like minded friends to play music in the first place.
